Womans Institute
Ullenhall W.I. benefits from a wide selection of talks at their monthly meetings, thanks to Susan Lee our Programme Secretary, and our membership continues to be around 30.
Over the last 12 months we have also enjoyed several extra activities, including a Van Gogh exhibition at Compton Verney; and a day at Calke Abbey. Also a Skittles evening at Snitterfield, a summer barbeque, a 12 day trip to the Italian Lakes, and apantomime at the refurbished Redditch theatre. These last four events being shared with husbands.
In September we again worked with the Garden Clud in the organisation of the Village Produce Show, which had the greatest attendance and participation in competitions to date.
Following the suggestion of several members, a village wall hanging is now in production which is being sponsored by the Village Hall Committee. It will depict the older houses in the village, and record to old field names, covering a period of 100 years, 1850 - 1950. A small group of enthusiastic W.I. members meet every fortnight to co-ordinate the ongoing work. It is hoped to hold another Archive Day when it is finished and displayed in the Committee Room.
The members voted to change thier choice of community work this year, so instead of equipping the Christmas Boxes to be sent abroad, it was decided to support the Acorns Hospice for Children in Selly Oak. We learnt that £450 paid for the maintenance of one bad for one day so we were pleased to achieve that figure from a coffee morning held in November at the President’s house. This was due entirely to the enthusiastic efforts of our members. Other local W.I.s were invited as well as local residents.
Skilts school is also regularly supported with gifts of reading books for the young boys attending there.
In March this year, we celebrated our 80th birthday, our Institute having run since 1927. Apparently meetings were held atthe Coffee House before the village hall was built.
Small groups of members have attended various W.I. Group Meetings and events, and Warwickshire Federation Council Meetings through the year, and some have attendedscience projects and talks at County House.
Over the years Ullenhall W.I. has earned a reputation of being a very friendly Institute, and we hope that will continue to be the case in the next 80 years!
